Are you business grade?

Time to talk about what's being delivered.

I constantly get clients coming to me with their own horror stories about having their websites created by artists, not engineers or developers. What this leads to for the most part is websites that don't evolve, don't provide relatively easy ways to keep pace with burgeoning tech. This doesn't mean that engineers and developers have it right either, if someone is delivering you a proprietary development, they damn well should be able to provide support for that system for years to come. Problem is that rarely happens and there are lots of clients stuck with proprietary developments that are difficult and expensive to update and manage.

Hosting your Joomla Website

February 01, 2011 0 Comments GooRu News by Curt Hemingway

Not all webhosts are the same! Some are based on windows servers and use asp databases, most now are on Unix servers running the Apache web host system. I usually see more legacy style solutions on the windows server.

Joomla works best on Apache, and very well with the Cpanel package installed on top of that. This helps control the apache permissions regarding the Joomla directory. Some Host although on Unix and Apache, run their own custom control panels (like Go Daddy) and quite frankly these never work well, and Joomla sites will suffer.

What's in a domain name?

February 01, 2011 0 Comments GooRu News by Curt Hemingway

You need a domain, or rather your business does. There are aspects to consider that elude you, so here is some insight.

We have registered probably well over a thousand domain names for a myriad of clients. In the early days of the internet there was a "land rush" for domain names, and some people set up "domain farms". Those are places and companies that spend all day snapping up names, and turning them around for sale. That avenue is available of course, and may be appropriate if it pertains to a brand or trademark or even product name.

Things you need to know about creating your website(s)

January 27, 2011 0 Comments GooRu News by Curt Hemingway

Here we go with the basics. I get asked all the time to detail the steps necessary to get going with a website. I'm talking primarily about Business websites here. I will also qualify this by saying I have a minimum requirement for business sites and the base line is this: If your site cannot be viewed the same way on all devices from smart phones to laptops and desktops on Mac, PC, Unix, Windows Phone 7, iOs and android, then the site fails. Delivering the message the same is of the highest order, the corporate message must be consistent.

You know what tech is the first out the door with this minimum requirement? Flash! That's right, the thing people ask for the most, is not business grade and has no place on a business website. Imagine a potential client visiting your flash website and cannot view it because it requires a plugin or flat-out just won't work on that device. This means no in my world, sorry flash. There is other tech out there that has issues as well, so make sure you test your site in every browser ad device you can. Don't worry about not being able to use flash though, we can get very creative and come up with alternatives.

What is Content Management ?

January 01, 2011 0 Comments Joomla by Curt Hemingway

Quite simply, Content Mangement is the editing of your site, but there are many distinctions. Writers pen their articles and submit to an editor to allude to the newspaper industry (works well here). Those articles are then "fitted" into the publication after the copy has been (re) formatted for the publication.

Your website can be approached much the same way, the artilces are written, checked and then published. When a company such as Web GooRu supplies Content Management, it goes something like this:

Wordpress or Joomla?

October 08, 2010 0 Comments Joomla by Curt Hemingway

If you are using Wordpress and intend to use it to build your business site, then STOP! Switch over to Joomla! And never look back. Continue down the path of Wordpress and get stuck in their development chasing Joomla! Somehow Wordpress has gained traction and has become quite popular. Folks may not know the difference and attach themselves to Wordpress because it looks easy. Make no mistake, Wordpress is not for businesses (yet). It has a long way to go to offer the resources required to support a business website.

Joomla! Comes from humble beginnings. It started as MAMBO a commercial product that the authors (from Australia) released in to the open source world. Problem was the authors had intended to bring MAMBO back into the commercial world after the Open Source community further developed it. That rubbed the open source community the wrong way and they “forked” the development and named the new development JOOMLA! Since then the CMS has attracted unprecedented developers of components, modules, plugins and templates. Their Forum alone has been the most active on the planet reaching 1 million posts a couple of years ago.

App reviewed: Informant

October 07, 2010 0 Comments iPhone by Curt Hemingway

A to-do and calendar application. Informant rocks, at least for me. I'm able to track the 52 projects I have on the go. Each project has dozens of tasks associated. It allows you to assign a task to a project, and date it, tag it, give it a context, add a child task, assign importance, mark completeness, make it repeat, assign to another calendar and add alarms.

That's pretty much everything you'd want to do. The folks that make the app respond quickly to requests, and the app itself gets updated regularly.

What you need to know to create/build your website

October 06, 2010 1 Comments Technology by Curt Hemingway

Here's the relative quick and dirty...

  1. Find a domain name

Website Designer or Website Developer?

October 05, 2010 1 Comments Technology by Curt Hemingway

There is a huge difference. I'm a developer so I'll be biased about this, but there is some logic here.

Website designers are typically graphic artists/designers. They make things look good, and assist in the layout. A web developer makes the site work, and function with all the resources, and in all the web browsers. A developer may even hire a web designer to help finish off the look and feel of the site.

Why choose Joomla! ?

October 04, 2010 0 Comments Joomla by Curt Hemingway

The Content Management Sytem (CMS) world is charging hard and making huge waves in the industry. CMS's have evolved in the last 7 years or so into a defacto development platform for many developers, namely myself.

CMS's have replaced many of the tools we used to use to develop websites. The evolution of the internet has matured the tools so that now developers can quickly bring a site to market. It used to take quite a long time to hand code a site. Now using CMS's that time has greatly been reduced. Not only can we build sites faster, but much more accurately too.

Managing your cellular data

October 02, 2010 0 Comments iPhone by Curt Hemingway

The iPhone brings an element to my business that I was not expecting. The iPhone has made it into my toolbox as must have tool for my business all day long. That means that I'm on it constantly, and rarely speaking on the phone, but using apps, email and the browser constantly. That means I have to keep an eye on my data traffic. If you have unlimited data then you don't need to know this. If you don't then read on.

Your iPhone has WIFI capability and that is the main thing that sold me. Now when I go out, I scan for available networks and connect when I can. Coffee shops, groceries and what have you. The fact that I can connect over Wifi, means that my cell carrier cannot charge me for the data. That's huge cause if it did not have it, I'd be paying huge for data. As it stands now, I'm actually under my data cap each month as I am careful where I get internet access on the iPhone. Yes it works wherever I get coverage, but the Wifi means I can work all day long and respond to email when I have to.

Blogging about the iPhone

October 01, 2010 0 Comments iPhone by Curt Hemingway

Welcome to iphone blog. Here I will review iphone apps and discuss features of the iphone. For now hardware reviews will focus on the Apple 3gs and the Apple iPhone OS 4.1. If you do not have the latest update I suggest you get it. If your phone is jail broken and you are concerned about the update DON'T DO IT until you have researched the process.

The recent update to the iPhone OS was done around the same time as the iTunes upgrade to v10. The most significant addition to the OS and itunes was the addition of PING. I musical twitter style social media...Jury is still out.

Website management

September 29, 2010 0 Comments Joomla by Curt Hemingway

Keep your website safe!

In my experience website management is a must. If left unchecked your website could easily become hacked or controlled by another. Why does this happen? Simple, the internet is a place of evolution, it does not stop expanding, or evolving, and if your website does not keep pace it becomes vulnerable very fast.

Dealing with Spam

August 06, 2010 0 Comments Technology by Curt Hemingway

SPAM! UGH!

We all get it, all day long. Spam now accounts for well over 90% of email sent around the world. That doesn't mean we are not sending much mail, because we are in a very huge way. It's just that spammers are prolific, and it wasn't that hard to be that prevalant. A few scripts and a spammer an proliferate the net with mindless junk. It's not going to go away, at least not completely. In fact the powers that be have even suggested that perhaps we will pay for every mail sent! YIKES!! Let's hope it does not go that way.

Here is how I deal with email, and the 15 unique email accounts I run with:
